Humidity Control For Pianos in Montreal

A professional recommendation by Patrick Brennan, Piano Tuner.

Arguments and benefits of the Piano Life Saver humidity control system

Smart protection
the foundation of a lasting piano

After more than 25 years of experience in piano tuning and repair in Montreal and surrounding areas, I can state one thing plainly: humidity is the number one factor in a piano going out of tune and deteriorating.

That is why I recommend installing a Piano Life Saver, a humidity control system designed specifically for pianos by the Dampp-Chaser Corporation.

Why is it essential?

A piano is mostly made of wood, a living material that constantly reacts to ambient humidity. Without control, the consequences are inevitable:

Frequent detuning
Mechanical problems
Premature wear
Loss of sound quality

Benefits of the system

Tonal and mechanical stability

  • • Maintains pitch longer between tunings.
  • • Stability of tone and sound.
  • • Improved action performance.
  • • Reduction of sluggish, sticking, or noisy keys.

Structural protection

  • • Prevents swelling and shrinking of the soundboard.
  • • Reduces stress on the pinblock.
  • • Decreases corrosion of strings and pins.
  • • Healthier aging of the instrument.

A reliable and discreet system

  • • Easy to maintain.
  • • Low energy consumption.
  • • Silent operation.
  • • Almost invisible once installed.
  • • 5-year manufacturer warranty.

A long-term investment

  • • Reduction of costly corrective interventions.
  • • Better preservation of the instrument.
  • • Increased resale value of the piano.

Humidity control is smart prevention. A well-protected piano ages better.

How does the system work?

Basically, the Piano Life Saver system continuously monitors the humidity level inside your piano and automatically adjusts the air by dehumidifying or humidifying it, in order to maintain a stable and safe environment for the instrument.

Installation of the humidity system on an upright and a grand piano

Humidistat

Continuously monitors relative humidity and detects if the ambient air is too dry or too humid.

Dehumidifier

When the humidity level is too high, the dehumidifier gently warms the humid air to reduce excess moisture.

Humidifier

When the air lacks moisture, the humidifier adds the necessary amount of humidity.

Indicator panel

Indicates that the system is on and functioning properly. Also signals when to add water or replace pads.

Contrary to popular belief, it is not the temperature that impacts your piano, but the humidity.

The impact of humidity
on piano tuning

Too humid conditions

When the soundboard absorbs moisture, it swells and exerts increased pressure on the strings.
Result: the piano's pitch goes too sharp, especially in the mid and high registers.

Too dry conditions

When the soundboard shrinks, the pressure on the strings decreases.
Result: the piano's pitch goes too flat and becomes unstable.

Tuning stability

The Piano Life Saver maintains constant humidity inside the piano, which significantly slows down pitch variations between tunings.

An essential foundation for your piano

Whether you own an upright or grand piano, humidity control is an essential preservation measure.

My role, as a piano tuner, is also to guide you towards solutions that preserve your instrument and prevent costly repairs.

As such, the Piano Life Saver is one of the most effective and proven systems I can recommend.
